The First US Patent

Nobrainer just visited the Mt. Vernon Grist Mill & Distillery. The mill is run on a design that was award the third US patent. This leads to obvious question of what was patent number one?

The first U.S. patent was granted in 1790 to Samuel Hopkins of Philadelphia for "making pot and pearl ashes"-a cleaning formula used in soapmaking.
