Bill Simmons's (@sportsguy33) two part podcast with South Park co-creator Matt Stone was pretty damn enjoyable throughout. One part I really enjoyed was Matt Stone explaining why people in Hollywood are so successful and so messed up at the same time. To paraphrase, what makes the driven and successful get of bed in the morning is the feeling that the work they are doing is a matter of life and death. This level of hyper-importance drives those writing a sitcom to spend 4 hours honing a fart joke. Of course, living with this level of hyper-importance twists ones world view to a degree that makes it difficult to view reality. Finding that balance between treating your work as life and death and understanding you are not a savior is difficult.
