Pardon my ignorance, but what practical use might one find for a hand held Geiger counter?

All I could gather from Amazon was the following review comment, "Not a professional instrument but good for someone who wants to be prepared for a local nuclear accident or terroist attack. Peace of mind. I tested it by holding it near a smoke detector and it worked!".

Wow, just $159.95 for protection. Sign me up. Heck, I'm gonna buy a pallet of these things and protect all of Greenville. Apparently, they are also useful for finding your smoke detectors. Might be particularly useful for pinpointing the offending smoke detector in the midst of a blaze.

I guess this assumes you have your own fallout shelter and surplus Y2K food supply. Then, perhaps it would be useful for letting you know when it's safe to go outside. Except, you have to go outside to use it! Duh.

Please, correct me if I'm missing the big picture here. I have a tendency to look at the details and then apply logic.

It's if Homer Simpson is your dad -- he works at a nuclear power plant and plays on a rec. baseball team named "The Isotopes"

Let us also not forget that Homer is a cartoon character.
