Comment Spammers Attack

Posted 10 years ago by Evan Tishuk

I wanted to apologize if any real person has tried to comment and found that it was scattered to the winds. To give you an idea of the scale of this onslaught, Akismet captured 553 thousand individual pieces of comment spam in two days--- more than they used to get in an entire month.

After a particularly strong bit of word of mouth from Adam "Web Jillion" Howell, I finally installed the aforementioned Akismet today. I can't really tell if it's officially the comment spam silver bullet, but, I've heard things.

Lemme know if you experience any problems by emailing me at: evan[at]orangecoat[d0t].com.

Surprisingly my comment spam has slowed to a trickle lately.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

how about one of those "1 + 1 = ?" style CAPTCHAs?

Tom, your blog aside, I've never liked those.

Akismet works well for me...but some still get through.

Those little spam bastards.

Oh wait.? Yup, there they are.

Might be my own fault though for being a month behind in updating SK2.

Ev, I don't even like that CAPTCHA on my blog -- it's just the best of a bunch of bad alternatives. It gets 99.5% of the attempts that come through, and I've taken great pains to make it a decent user experience.

And yeah, YOU don't have to enter a code and everyone else does. ;)

I know, you've done a good job making it a very usable CAPTCHA (sounds like a Siberian province). I also don't get nearly as much traffic as you.

And, yeah, the VIP pass on your site is nice! Thanks.
