Serious Eats has a very interesting post on the movement towards home distilled and craft liquors. Homemade liquors are no longer just the 180 proof (or plus) moonshines. Folks are distilling for flavor and fun. Viva la homemade bourbon.
I had some home-made bourbon at my last homebrewers meeting. It was one of the best I'd ever had. I don't like many liquors straight up, preferring to mix with tonic or Sprite, but I could have sipped on that stuff straight until I was passed out in a gutter. So good!
