I always love to see what the past thought the future was going to look like. Check out the 1958 Disney film, Magic Highway USA. (via JSM)
Soooo many comments, so little time. I love how they can come up with the Sun Powered Electrosuspension Car (with a compass in the stock and) which needs no wheels..yet the touch screen eluded the visionaries of 1958.
I seriously shoulda become an Imagineer.
The situation in these that I always find interesting are the ones about how easy is going to be to get to your office in the future. This video includes a parking garage that takes you all the way to your desk. The Jetsons dropped people out of flying cars to their destination.
The reality is the internet brings your work, your shopping, shit, your interactions with others to you; so we don't need these pods taking us everywhere. It's a strange reversal of expectations that I don't think many people saw.
John Warner sent me this video about "Free" and I think it might have something to add to this conversation. I think the big mistake that people made back then was assuming that energy would eventually be free.
If it didn't really cost anything for energy, we'd have conveyor belt roads equipt with radiant heaters to boil off precipitation, giant mobile kilns to churn out finished roads and bridges, and moving parking decks.
