What's the Elevator Pitch For RSS?

Posted February 23, 2006 by Adam Gautsch

Every good businessman should be able to explain their big idea in a 10 minute elevator pitch or so they tell me. So, what's the elevator pitch for RSS?

It is, without a doubt, the hardest new technology to explain to those that don't know. You have to explain.

  1. What an RSS feed is
  2. Who / What provides RSS feeds (blog, newspaper site, etc)
  3. What an RSS Reader is
  4. Who uses an RSS Reader and why and where you can get said RSS reader
  5. Why it is important and helpful to you

Even if you find the exact best order to tell this information (do you explain the reader before the feed etc) it is going to take damn near 20 minutes to explain it all. At least it feels that way.

Now RSS is important. It is one of the most important technologies to come out or become popular during the blog boom and there are hundreds of ways to use it in and out of the blog format. I just need an easy way to explain it- anybody got a any bright ideas?
